History of Fenner

Through the innovation of JH Fenner and Hopkins Bros. & Odlum, our manufacturing history goes back over 150 years.
Today, Fenner Conveyors is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Michelin.

1861

Founding of Fenner

England in Hull – Joseph Henry Fenner Founded the company manufacturing leather and encompassed belting, lacing and hosing

1890

First Expansion

The company had expanded and exported its products into Europe, India and the Far East

1937

Momentum

The company continued to gain momentum and became a public entity and has been quoted on the London stock exchange ever since.

1950

Ground Breaking Innovation

Fenner developed a fire resistant belt that has, with it’s successors, become a world standard.

1950's

Global Expansion

Fenner expanded globally, establishing companies in Australia, India and South Africa.

1960

Concurring Africa with manufacturing

Fenner South Africa officially opened a Solid Woven manufacturing facility and distribution outlet in Johannesburg

1998

ISO 9001 Certification

FSA received the first ISO 9001 certification and continues to be compliant.

2007

Steel Cord

Fenner SA - Steelcord Factory commissioned in JHB for local manufacturing.

2013-2014

Services

Fenner SA Introduced Services and splicing teams.On site maintenance teams .24/7 belt monitoring FSA established the 1st Midscale galary testing facility in South Africa. (SANS971:2013) Splicing, On-site Maintenance, On-site Bletsman, Belt Installations, Belt reeling (removal)MFL 24/7 Systems, Manual MFL Scans, Camera monitoring, Systems Health checks.

2014-2015

Trading Inhancement

Fenner Sa Enter the plied belt market with reliable supply of imported plied belting. Introduction of Dynaflex STC belting at Sishen (Kumba Iron Ore)

2018

Distribution

Fenner SA entered into Sole distribution agreement with BMG, contracts ceded to BMG

2020

Go to Market Direct

Go to market direct – FSA ended distribution agreement with BMG to supply directly to end users.

Slab Stock plied belting – strategic supply of plied belting to infiltrate the market.

2022

Rebranding

Rebranding Fenner Conveyors a Michelin Group of Companies.

Introduction of Dynaflex STC at Sasol.

Upgrade dipping facility to be environmentally sustainable and comply to emissions controls.

2024-2025

Textile Reinforced Belting Manufacturing

Capex approval - Plied belt building table

Installation of equipment and commissioning to commence Q1 2025.

Website upgrade and go live Q1 2025.
